Chakotay's mind raced as they walked to his quarters. His arm rested loosely around Kathryn's waist. She strode at her normal brisk pace, slightly ahead of him.

When they left the holodeck she became the captain again. He was finding it difficult to believe that the flirtatious woman from Sandrine's had ever existed. She must have been leading him on for the fun of it. Impossible to believe this efficient woman would deliberately throw a pool game, deliberately lose a bet that meant she had to spend a night with him in his quarters. Alone.

But she had kissed him as if she meant it. With his free hand he lifted his fingers to his lips as if to verify her touch.

They arrived at his door. He let his hand fall and turned to her again.

She recognized the question for what it was, a way out if she chose to take it.

She didn't answer, just keyed in her override and led the way into his quarters. Without calling for lights she walked into his bedroom and stationed herself on the far side of his bed - the side that he didn't sleep on.

He followed her in and stood looking at her. And grinned. "Do you want to know why I missed the first easy shot on the black this evening? I had a vision of winning our bet and I was was wondering what you would wear to bed." His lips quirked, "I guess I'm just about to find out."

"What are you going to wear, Chakotay?"

"That's for you to find out."

Without breaking eye contact he pulled off his boots.

She pulled off hers.

He sat on the bed and removed his socks.

She did the same.

He stood up and pulled his shirt over his head, daring her with his eyes to match him.

She grinned and pulled her sweatshirt off, revealing a loose oversize T shirt.

"Hey, not fair - I only had my shirt."

She reached around her back underneath her shirt, and unhooked her bra. Without removing her T shirt, she pulled it first off one arm, then the other, then pulled the whole thing out slowly through the sleeve. He looked at the emerging scrap of black lace and gulped. "I guess that's fair trade."

His hand went to the button of his pants and he watched her reaction. He didn't want to scare her away, but there was no way he was going to sleep in his pants.

Her eyes were intent, watching as he undid the button and lowered the fly. She watched his large hands, slowly inch his pants down over his hips. He let them fall to the floor and stepped out of them, leaving him clad only in a pair of black cotton boxer shorts.

She grinned saucily at him and wiggled out of her jeans. The oversize tee shirt fell down to mid thigh, effectively concealing her underwear from him. She broke the eye contact and slipped under the covers, turning her back on him.

"Good night, Chakotay."

He climbed in next to her and lay on his back, pondering his next move. He was wide awake. Quietly he turned his head and looked at her. All that was visible under the covers was the top of her head, red hair spilling over his pillow. He studied her, memorizing how she looked in his bed.

She sighed and snuggled down further in the bed, effectively annexing most of the covers. A draft stole in, and crept up his side where she had pulled the covers away from him. Tugging at the covers, he succeeded in recovering part of them.

The bed was not large, barely a double and he was conscious that her bottom poked out towards him, well over the halfway mark. She shifted slightly, her bottom brushed his hip and the covers moved towards her side again.

He closed his eyes briefly, this could be a long night. Already he was reacting to her closeness and the idea of her in his bed. He stole a look at her again, her breathing was regular and she appeared to be falling asleep. She moaned softly and rolled onto her stomach, taking all the covers with her, leaving him exposed to the cool air in his quarters. Her hand shot out and clutched his pillow and she sprawled, breathing deep and regular.

He propped himself up on an elbow and looked at her. Was she doing this deliberately? He wouldn't have thought so, but after the pool game he really didn't know what she was up to anymore.

"Chakotay, lie down and go to sleep." Her voice was muffled by the pillow. His pillow.

"I'm cold. You've taken all the bedclothes."

Rolling onto her side facing him, she lifted the bedclothes.

"Come in here then."

He didn't need to be asked twice, and moved in close to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and lifting a leg to drape it over her thigh. She sighed and snuggled in close to him, resting her cheek on his smooth chest, burrowing a small hand under his arm to clasp his back. He tried to angle his lower body away from her, so that she wouldn't realize how stimulated he was, but she kept moving closer.

"This is nice isn't it? Why haven't we done this before?"

"Kathryn," he was being patient. "You know why we haven't done this before."

Her voice was muffled by his chest. "Humor me, tell me why."

"There's only one reason - you didn't want to before now."

She tilted her head up to look at him. "And you did?"

He smiled down at her. "Always. You know that."

"What else did you want to do?"

He read the silent invitation in her eyes. "This."

He bent his head and claimed her lips. A gentle kiss, barely pressuring her, moving his lips softly and warmly on hers, not forcing his way into her mouth. She sighed and opened her lips under his. Gently, he slipped his tongue into her mouth, slowly and quietly, letting her know he wanted her, but not pushing her. She kissed him back, tangling her tongue with his and moving her hands up to his shoulders, smoothing small hands over his skin. He deepened the kiss a little, then pulled back, dropping small featherlight kisses over her lips, cheeks and forehead.

"Hmmmmm." She hummed under her breath and arched under his soothing hands.

"Why are you doing this?"

"I lost the bet didn't I?"

"You deliberately lost the bet."

"Clever of me." She smiled up at him, and her hand wandered down his smooth back.

"Why now?"

"It's about time isn't it?"

"Kathryn, please." He moved away from her, away from those stroking fingers that were weakening his resolve. "Please, humor me. Tell me why now, what your motive is, and if you care about me at all, tell me that in the morning you won't glare at me, call me commander and order me to forget about it."

"I'm not expecting you to forget about it. I don't plan on forgetting it. I'm counting on remembering this for a very long time."

"Is this all it will be? A memory?"

"Chakotay, my heart, I'm hoping this will be the first of many memories. Did I tell you that I love you? And that I don't want to be without you any longer?"

He looked down at her, joy suffusing his face like the sunrises they never saw on Voyager. "You do? I think you forgot that small point."

He rolled back close to her, taking her in his arms, holding her tight against his heart. Her head was pressed to his chest, he could feel the tickled of her hair and the frisson of breath over his skin. She burrowed her hands around his back, one wandering slowly down to the waist of his boxers.

He held her close, pressing a kiss on the top of her head and simply held her, delighting in the feel of her body curled trustingly against his, one of her smooth legs pushed between his. One of his hands stroked her back where the T shirt had worked up, smoothing over her skin. His heart was so full he doubted he would sleep.

"Yes my love?"

"Isn't this when you are supposed to tell me you love me too?"

He chuckled and rolled her underneath him, covering her with his long length. Taking his weight on his elbows he stared down at her, so that she could see his face and never doubt the sincerity of his words.

"I love you Kathryn, forever. That will never change." And he bent his head to kiss her.

He awoke before the alarm the next morning and instantly remembered everything from the night before. Curled up beside him, head on his chest, one slim leg draped over him was Kathryn. He lay still, letting her sleep, and savored the unfamiliar feeling of total, all encompassing happiness. The woman in his arms had given him the most precious gift he had ever received. Herself.

The alarm sounded and she raised her head, snarled hair falling over her face, creased with sleep. She had never looked so beautiful. She looked at him in total bewilderment for a split second, before smiling and resting her head down on his chest.

Her voice was muffled. "I thought I was dreaming."

He knew how she felt.

"I have to get up. Seeing as how I lost a bet last night, I still have to do my early duty shift."

He kissed her soundly and slowly, not trying to change her mind, but letting her know he wanted her to stay.

Reluctantly she pulled away. "Until tonight, Chakotay." Unselfconciously naked she climbed out of bed and walked into his sonic shower.

He relaxed back against the headboard, arms behind his head. He doubted he would stop smiling for a month. Kathryn, naked, in his shower. Oh, what a life. What a wonderful, glorious life. He swung himself out of bed, intending to join her, but was stopped by the door chime. Who could possibly want him at seven in the morning?

He pulled on a pair of sweatpants and went to answer the door. Outside stood B'Elanna, dressed for velocity. He stared blankly at her.

"You forgot again, didn't you, Chakotay. Don't you remember? You, me, velocity, this morning for an hour?" She pushed past him and plonked herself down on his couch." I'll just wait here while you get dressed."

Well, it looked like their new relationship was about to have its first test. He glanced over to the bedroom door. The shower was quiet. He should go and warn Kathryn that B'Elanna was here.

Too late. The door swung open, and Kathryn walked into the living area, wearing his bathrobe and obviously nothing underneath.

"I'm going to have to start leaving a uniform here. I don't suppose you want to go next door and get one for me?"

B'Elanna's jaw dropped.

"Oh, hello, B'Elanna, did you come for Chakotay?"

"Err.. yes, Captain, I'm sorry, I didn't know you would be here."

"Neither did I, B'Elanna, neither did I."

She crossed over to where Chakotay was standing, put her arms around him, raised up on her toes and kissed him on the mouth oblivious to B'Elanna who was still staring at them open mouthed.

"Go on, Chakotay, don't keep B'Elanna waiting." To B'Elanna, she added, "Don't wear him out too much please, I have plans for later that involve him."

Chakotay disappeared into the bedroom and came out two minutes later, dressed for velocity. "Ready, B'El?"

B'Elanna just nodded, her eyes on the captain.

"Go on you two," said Kathryn, "I've got to get ready. Bridge duty in twenty minutes."

Chakotay crossed to her and hugged her. "You okay with this?" he asked her softly.

She hugged him back. "Yes, I am. No secrets on this ship. Go on, I'll see you later. I love you."

"I love you too." He kissed her and left, dragging a speechless B'Elanna with him by the arm.

Kathryn turned and walked back towards the bedroom. And stopped. She still hadn't got a uniform to wear.

Well, everyone would know by the end of today anyway, if B'Elanna's face was anything to go by. She walked out of Chakotay's quarters into the busy corridor and down to her own quarters, wearing nothing but his bathrobe.
