Jack groaned, leaving his head to rest against his desk. "So this is the thanks I get for getting promoted to general, a huge mound of paperwork and my two best friends deceiving me." There was a knock at his door.

"For crying out loud, what?" he yelled. He felt bad as the unsuspecting airmen quickly entered, dropped the report on his desk then quickly dismissed himself. Jack simply added to the ever-growing pile. "I'm never going to get home."

He glanced at the clock, realizing it was way past dinner time, dying to go grab something to eat but leaving his office meant possibly running into them and he wasn’t sure he wanted to do that. He leaned back into his chair, drifting off into thought about his newest discovery; Sam and Daniel were a couple.

~~~~~~~
Jack rounded the corner, quickly side stepping the airmen who was flying in the other direction.
"Sorry sir,' the man mumbled before continuing on his path.
Jack bit back his tongue, knowing it wouldn’t be right to yell at the man, yet his mood was so poor that he felt like biting the head off of anyone who was in his way  He had been in the mess hall, attempting to enjoy a badly cooked meal when he over heard the group at the table next to him. They were talking about the latest rumor, one he hadn't heard yet and although he was dreadfully hoping it wasn't true, what they were saying was exactly what he had noticed all along; lately Sam and Daniel were spending an awful lot of time together.
It was ridiculous! The two of them were nothing but friends. Why in the world would they change that? The idea of them two together was like…..well, it was just wrong.
Jack had a plan, simple really. He was headed for Daniel's office, planning on talking to the young man. He would start it off with joking about the latest rumor and hopefully not end it by punching Dr. Jackson in the face. 'strike that, hitting him would do no good… how about killing him?' Perhaps in his state of mind, this wasn’t the most opportune time to bring this subject up, but it was either that, or let it drive him crazy wondering.
He reached Daniels office, noticing the door was slightly ajar. He pushed it open just enough for him to see Sam and Daniel lip locked.
'Oh, for crying out loud!'
Sam was doing her best not to laugh, the grin slowly spreading across her face, "I pour my feelings out to you, and all you can do is laugh," Daniel muttered.
"I am not laughing, really, but Daniel, what makes you think a relationship between you and Janet is off limits," Samantha said, still grinning from ear to ear.
"I have heard the rules plenty, Janet is part of the military and…." he began.
"But you aren't military, Daniel, and you don’t fall under her direct chain of command," explained Sam. "I know you know that, so tell me, what's holding you back?"
Daniel sighed, "I don’t know, scared I guess. The last relationship I was in was with Sha're and that was a real long time ago. Everytime I get the nerve up to say something that nerve quickly vanishes. What if she doesn’t feel the same way? What if I screw something up and she leaves me? What if she doesn’t like the way I kiss? I never was the greatest kisser, you know, and it's not like I've had the chance to practice."
Sam rolled her eyes, "What if the goa'uld come back and blow this entire instillation up. Come on, you're just making excuses."
"No, I'm serious. Sha're was a loving wonderful person, but she always said my kissing left something to be desired."
"Seriously?" asked Sam.
"Ok, no, but I got the distinct impression she felt I could use improvement in that area," he said quietly.
It was clear to Sam that, for whatever reason, Daniel clearly believed this about himself. "Okay, then, try me."
"Try you?" he asked, a bit confused.
"Kiss me, Daniel, I'll tell you if you need improvement or not," she said confidently.
Daniel sighed, "I'm not kissing you, Sam, that would be just wrong."
Sam swatted his arm. "I’m not trying to seduce you here, Daniel, I'm just giving you the opportunity to get an unbiased opinion."
Daniel thought for a moment, then spoke, "Are you sure you don’t mind?"
"I offered, didn't I," she said. "Just a kiss."
Daniel took a deep breath and leaned in close, just barely swiping his lips against hers. At her glare, he reached behind her neck, pulling her close, his mouth capturing hers for a searing kiss. When he finally pulled away, he looked at her with hopeful eyes.
"Well," began Sam, "you, certainly, don't have a problem in that area."
"Really?" he  asked, looking like a little boy who just got a good grade.
"So, now you don't have any excuses," she said, pushing him off the chair and to the door.
He stopped, crossed his arms around his chest and spoke, "Fine, I will do it, starting with a date, if..."
Sam groaned, "If what?"
"If you do the same with Jack. Isn't it about time you stop hiding your feelings?" asked Daniel.
"Daniel, I think you know its not the same for us, there are regulations," she said.
It was Daniel's time to roll his eyes, "Oh come on, Sam, it’s a rule, yes, but rules are meant to be broken. How many times have we bended or broken the rules?"
Sam shook her head. "I don’t know."
"I know, just think about it, okay?" he said. Leaning close to her he gave her a small peck on the lips, "Well, I have a date to make."
Sam watched him leave, knowing he spoke at least a partial truth. "If only it was that easy."
~~~~~

It had been a week, a week of sulking and wondering just what those two were doing. He knew he had been a bear to be around, but that was to be expected, Why hadn’t they told him? Sneaking around behind his back is just so wrong.

And now this. Just what in the world is Daniel up to? First he is kissing his Sam, now he is asking Frasier out?  This was too much. Time to confront Sam, let her know just what she got herself into.

He made his way to her lab, knowing she was in there working on the latest whatsits they had found on P3X-267. He hadn't a clue what it was supposed to do, but Carter had sure been excited about it and that meant locking herself in her lab and not coming out until she knew every detail.

Jack knocked on the door and entered at her bidding. Sure enough, she was hunched over her table, magnifying glass on top of the object. She looked up briefly, "What can I do for you, Sir?" she said a bit tersely.

Okay, so maybe he had been taking the wounded bear thing a bit too far, "I need to talk to you."

Sam sat up straight. "What about, Sir?"

"For crying out loud, would you stop with the Sir?" he yelled, "Listen Sam, this isn’t easy so I'm just going to tell you. First of all, I know about you and Daniel, so you can stop sneaking around. Secondly, he just asked Frasier out, so whatever it is between you two isn't that important to him."

Sam jumped up from her chair, "He did it? He seriously asked her out? Yes!" she said with enthusiasm.

"Umm, yes, he did. And you're happy about it?" Jack asked.

"Of course I am, this is great," she explained.

Jack looked perplexed. "What about the two of you?"

"The two of us? Jack, Daniel and I are just friends, you know that," she said, lightly tapping his chest.

"I saw the two of you kissing, so you don’t have to keep lying to me," he said, taking a step back, just out of her reach.

"You saw that?" She couldn't believe it, "This is what this is about, you being grumpier than a Goa'uld without a ship?" Sam chuckled. "We kissed, yes. But it wasn't what you think. I let Daniel kiss me so I could tell him… " She sighed, it was kind of embarrassing actually. "So I could tell him if he kissed well or not. He was a bit nervous about it, and I was a good, unbiased subject."

"An experiment, this was all an experiment?" of all the idiotic…

"Sorry, it wasn't meant to be seen, and please don’t say anything to Daniel about it. It wasn't anything, really. We talked, he told me his fears, I let him kiss me, then told him to go ask her out. He told me I should… well, at least he actually did it, that’s great," Sam said.

"Told you that you should what?" Jack asked, curious.

Sam looked at him and sighed, she knew he wouldn't let up, "Until I talked to you. You know, about how we feel. He told me I should just go ahead and break the rules, stupid, I know."

Jack just continued staring at her. He couldn’t believe it. He finally had the angle he had been hoping for all this time, and it was that little twerp that gave it to him. "An experiment huh, well it seems to me that experiments such as that need more than just one trial to know if it worked. It seems to me that you need another, someone else that you can compare him to, just to be sure."

Sam looked at him wide eyed. Did he just say what she thought he said? "Sir… Jack…" she began, but was cut off by his lips capturing hers. There was no way that Daniel was going to show him up.

When their lips finally parted, she remained close to him, looking up, "Hmmm, I see what you mean. But I do think we are going to have to try this more than once, just to be sure."

Jack smiled down at her. "No problem, but we leave out the Daniel equation, okay?"

Sam hugged him tightly. "That is not a problem."
