Disclaimer: I don't own them, I'm only playing.

I heard a rumor, of how one writer envisioned Workforce. It's just too bad they didn't do it. I based some of this story on the wonderful ep, but then let it take off on its own. Oh, and I'm going to assume they were there a few months instead of a few weeks, it's my story after all.

With the alarm blaring in her ears Kathryn leaned close and whispered to it, "Come on, shut off that damn alarm and I promise I'll never violate you again." A strong dark hand came into view and simply pressed one button, finally brining silence.

"You almost started a core overload," said the man.

"I would have corrected it," stated Kathryn, not liking the fact that he showed her up.

"I'm sorry for interrupting then, and for eavesdropping. I heard you talking to your console," he said with a slight smile.

"An old habit," she replied.

"Does it work?"

"I'm not sure this control panel and I speak the same language yet," she said, giving the panel an affectionate pat.

"Well, if you need an interpreter, Chakotay," he said, reaching out to shake her hand.

"Kathryn," she said, with a wry smile.

"I work just down there," he said, motioning a few panels down. "And I'm new here too. I was wondering... would you like to get a bite to eat after work. There is a place that I've heard about that I was going to go to and I would love for you to join me."

"I'm sorry, but I have to study these manuals, maybe another time," said Kathryn.

"I noticed we were of the same species, yet I don't know you. Maybe we have a few things in common," said Chakotay making a last ditch effort to get her to change her mind.

"I really am sorry," she apologized.

He gave her a nod and went to his station, he wasn't about to give up yet. This would just take a different strategy.

"I thought you said you had to study," said Chakotay with a smile. He had just spotted Kathryn in the local diner.

"I am," said Kathryn, setting her cup down. "I just thought I would get a bite to eat while I did so," she explained.

"Well, do you mind if I join you? I could use some brushing up on these too," he said picking up one of her padds.

"What? You don't know them by heart yet?" she laughed.

"No, of course not. I just knew how to stop that alarm, call it a lucky guess," Chakotay laughed back. "I guess I'm just curious about you. I asked around, we came in at the same time, did you know that?"

"No, really we did?  Funny, I don't know you at all. Maybe we came on different ships, are you from Earth too?" she asked curiously.

"No, actually I'm not. I was born on Dorvan V, but I visited Earth many times. I didn't like it there," he said in a lower voice.

"You and me both. It's so much more peaceful here," said Kathryn with a faraway look in her eyes.

"Yes, they treat us good here. I think I'm going to like it very much, especially with my new found friend," he said, flashing his dimples.

"Oh really. Well listen, its close to curfew, I should head back home," Kathryn said as she gathered up her padds.

"Can I walk you?" at her exasperated look he threw up his hands, "Just to make sure you get home ok."

She gave him an evil look then laughed, "Fine. You are persistent aren't you?"

"Of course, persistence gets me what I want," he said, hoping she caught onto the hidden meaning.

They laughed and made casual conversation on the way home, Kathryn was glad that Chakotay finally seemed to taper off the flirting for now. She knew she found him attractive, but she didn't want to rush into anything, at least not yet.

For the next week Kathryn found herself constantly watching Chakotay. She couldn't help but peer over the top of her console and sneak glances when he wasn't looking.

More and more her thoughts of him were turning into a more personal nature, including a very erotic dream with him on top of her and her writhing underneath that golden body of his. She was beginning to think it might not be too bad to allow a relationship to form with this man. He certainly was nice and good looking. What would be the harm?

She didn't have to wait long Chakotay, as soon as her shift was over he stopped her, "Hi Kathryn, how was your day today?"

"Oh not bad, but then again you should know that, you work on the next console," she pointed out.

He flashed his dimples at her, "Oh you noticed that did you? I wouldn't have guessed."

Oh no, did he notice her looking, "And just what does that mean?"

"I can see your reflection in the panels, but don't worry, I can't seem to stop looking at you either," he admitted. "Join me for dinner tonight? My place?"

She bit her lower lip, trying to hide embarrassment, but quickly decided, "Sure, why not?"

"Great, let's go," he said, leading her out of the gigantic factory.

Kathryn was still feeling unsettled from her encounter with Tuvok when Chakotay asked her out to dinner once again, "I'll agree to have dinner with you again on one condition," she leaned close to him, "I make it."

Chakotay laughed, "I agree to those terms."

"Good, now lets get back to our station before the efficiency monitor accuses us of fraternizing again," she said, quickly turning away to monitor her stations.

Kathryn rushed into the dining room, carrying a hot dish, "mmm , smells good," commented Chakotay.

"It's only burnt on the outside," she tried to explain. "Your cooking console is a little temperamental, huh?"

"Did you try talking to it?" laughed Chakotay.

"Once I cut off the charred part, I'm sure it will be fine," she said, sounding determined.

Chakotay smiled as he cut at the meal, looking at Kathryn who looked like a little kid awaiting praise from a parent. He slipped a piece in and attempted to look as if he was enjoying it, "It's good," he lied.

"Really," she said with surprise.

Chakotay made a face then shook his head as he spit the offending piece into a napkin.

"Let's go," Kathryn said, flying up from the table.

"Wait," he said, getting up after her.

She grabbed her coat and started to put it on, " I promised you dinner, we'll just have to get it somewhere else."

He grabbed her arm and swung her around to face him, she placed her hands on his chest and looked up at him. "I'm not really hungry," he admitted. "Are you?"

"No," she said quietly.

"Let's stay here," he whispered before he met her lips in a passionate kiss. He broke from her and took her hand, leading the way to the bedroom.

Kathryn slowly walked to the couch, still a little stiff from their encounter just a short time ago, it had been a long time since she had been with a man, and Chakotay certainly had a lot of talent.

"The cooking console being temperamental again?" asked Chakotay.

"Making a hot drink is one thing I can do," she said as she settled down next to him.

She handed him the drink and watched him take a sip, "You're right, it's good."

"I told you," she said stretching out to lie across him.

"What's even better is being here with you," he said wrapping his arm around her, " Are you comfortable?"

"The blankets nice and warm," she replied.

He smiled at her, "No, I mean being here with me."

She reached out to trace the tattoo that graced his forehead; " I can't remember being more comfortable in my life."

He bent down and kissed her, happy for the first time in a long time.

The next month was blissful for Kathryn, she and Chakotay had moved together shortly after they admitted their feelings. Now they spent day and night together, and neither of them could have been happier.

She had just left the medical facility, with a grin plastered to her face, she only hoped Chakotay would be as happy as she was with the news she just got. She sauntered over to her console and quickly began working.

Chakotay turned to her and smiled, "So just where have you been?" he asked.

"Nowhere important," she laughed.

"I know that look, your wheedling," he said, pointing an instrument at her. "So what is it?"

She grinned, "You will just have to wait to later."

He moved over to her console, "What? Tell me."

"Now who is wheedling?" she laughed. "Alright, I went to see the doctor."

"Why? Are you ok?" he asked with a bit of concern.

"I am perfectly fine," she said, not offering any more information.

"Kathryn," he practically yelled.

"Go back to work daddy," she said sneakily.

He turned to walk away, giving in for the moment. But then he realized what she had said, "Kathryn? Are you...?"

"Yes, I'm pregnant, about two months," she explained.

He ran to her, grabbing her and lifted her off the ground, whirling her around, "I can't believe this, I'm going to be a dad." He put her back down and kissed her, "I love you Kathryn."

She was shocked but happy about his reaction, "I love you too, now get back to work, we can celebrate later," she said, pushing him away.

Kathryn sat fidgeting in her seat, she and Chakotay had decided to keep quiet about her condition, but she was almost four months now, and could no longer hide it. She had to let her supervisors know, and she hoped it would not affect her job.

"I'm glad you finally told us, of course we already knew, you did find out from our doctors after all," said the man.

"I'm sorry sir, Chakotay and I just wanted time to adjust to this news," she explained.

"Ah, Mr. Chakotay is the father then. I should have suspected that," he watched Kathryn's face suddenly fall, "Oh don't worry, you weren't that obvious on the job. It was off duty that I seen you two a few times. And after all, you are now sharing an apartment."

"Yes, of course. We would never fraternize while on duty. I need to know, is this going to affect my job any sir?" she asked a little nervous.

"No, as long as you stay able to work, it should be fine. I've spoken with the doctor already, and he said it should be fine to allow you to work throughout your pregnancy," explained the supervisor.

"Well, sir. I think perhaps I should return to my station," said Kathryn, getting up from her seat, "And sir, thank you."

"Your welcome Janeway," he said.

Kathryn approached her station noticing Chakotay at his conversing with a man she did not recognize, "Kathryn, come here," he yelled.

She sauntered up to him, Hi, well the meeting went fine," she explained.

"Wonderful, so will the pregnancy affect your job?" Chakotay asked.

"No, not at all. They already knew, it seems the doctor told them," she began to tell Chakotay.

"Your pregnant?" blurted out the man.

"I'm sorry Kathryn, this is Harron, he's new here and came to introduce himself," said Chakotay.

"Hello, I'm Kathryn and yes, I'm pregnant; almost four months." Kathryn was grinning from ear to ear.

Harry was stunned, here he was standing in front of his two commanding officers, under a disguise, but not that great of one. Neither of them knew who he was, along with a few other of the crew that he ran into, and now he found out that they were expecting a baby. Those two would be stunned when he returned them to Voyager.

"Neelix, what do we do?" said Harry, doing his best not to pace along side the bar in the diner.

"Now Harry, I think this is wonderful. The two of them finally together," commented Neelix.

"Yes, when neither of them know who they really are. Neelix, they are going to freak when the doctor returns their memories."

"Freak, I think you have been hanging around Mr. Paris too long. It will be fine, Oh look, here they are now," said Neelix, looking at the entrance. "It won't be easy getting Chakotay, he's a big man."

"No, it won't. But we have to, Voyager needs its crew; especially its captain and first officer. Lets see what they do, maybe we'll get a better opportunity when they leave," said Harry.

The two of them sat at the bar, watching the couple in question. Kathryn and Chakotay sat right next to each other, and didn't stop touching each other through their entire dinner. Once they were done eating a few more people joined them.

Harry was beginning to think an opportunity to grab them would never come up, too many people around but then he noticed Kathryn get up, kiss Chakotay and turn to the door.

"Chakotay, I just don't feel good. Stay for a while, enjoy, I'm going to go to bed early," said Kathryn.

"I should walk you home Kathryn," implored Chakotay.

"No, I'm a big girl, I will be just fine," she said as she kissed him. "I will see you in a little bit."

"Alright Kathryn, I love you," he said, returning the kiss. He watched her walk to the door, never noticing the two men who got up and followed her out the door.

Kathryn quickened her pace trying not to turn around once again, she had noticed the two men following her almost the minute she left the diner. She didn't think much of it, one of them was the young man Chakotay was talking to in the factory. She assumed they must have been going the same was as she was.

"Kathryn," said Harry, almost chuckling to himself. It wasn't easy calling her by her first name, yet, he knew she would not respond to Captain.

Kathryn stopped walking and turned around, "Yes?"

"Wait up, we wanted to talk to you," said Harry.

Kathryn stopped, her hand unconsciously wandering down to her belly. "What did you need?" she asked, trying not to sound nervous.

Neelix looked around, and once he confirmed there was no one else around he nodded to Harry, it was best that they did not waste anytime. "We don't want to hurt you," said Neelix as the both approached her from either side.

They quickly went into action, both grabbing her. She screamed and fought, "Please, I'm pregnant, don't hurt me."

Harry let go for a minute to contact Voyager, and then watched the two of them vanish as the transporter beam grabbed them.

Kathryn fought the two men with all she had in her, "Please, let me go. Where am I? Who are you? What do you want?"

"Do not worry, you are safe. We aren't here to hurt you," stated the doctor. He reached for a hypospray decided tranquilizing her was probably the best thing to do at the present time.

The doctor was comparing scans of Kathryn, "The scan on the left was performed during the Captains last physical, the one on the right just a few minutes ago. The memory centers of her brain have been radically altered."

Neelix continued, "People from our crew seem to remember parts of there real lives, but have all the details wrong. Tom knew his name, that he was from Earth, but he said space travel made him sick."

"Who ever did this is very sophisticated, capable of manipulating memory engrams. Some have been suppressed, some altered, some repressed, others left intact," explained the doctor.

"Can you undo the damage?" asked Neelix.

"I believe so, but it will take some time," said the doctor.

"I wish I could help," Neelix said solemnly.

"Maybe you can, she will require several treatments. In between you could expose her to familiar sights and surroundings."

"Say no more I'll take her on a whirl wind tour of her own life," said Neelix with a much more positive dttitude.

"Don't rush things, she may be the Captain, but this will still be very traumatic for her," said the doctor.

"I understand," answered Neelix.

Kathryn walked around the room, her room. She stopped at a picture on the desk, one the senior staff, "Where was this taken?"

"That was taken on Ancestors eve. We made it up to help you through a tough time, some news you received had upset you," explained Neelix.

"Chakotay, he's here in this picture. Were we close?" she asked, noticing she was in front, and yet Chakotay was in the back, far from her.

"The two of you were friends, good friends. But I don't think you were as close as you ... are now," Neelix said.

"No? I find that hard to believe, we hit it off immediately. How could I work with him, and not..." she shook her head.

"Well, as I said before, you are the Captain here. And as the Captain I believe fraternizing with a member of your crew wouldn't be considered appropriate. Or so you have always believed," he said with a chuckle.

Kathryn hand wandered down to her stomach, "Are you saying that the two of us, if we come back here, we can't have a relationship?"

"Oh I wouldn't go so far as to say that. I think Starfleet rules and regulations frowns on it, but I know that the crew would support you one hundred percent."

"I see," she said, picking up another object. "This watch, he gave it to me. Something about a ship lost at sea."

"I do believe the Commander had deep feelings for you, but just held them at bay. I wouldn't worry too much about the other stuff, all will happen just the way it should. Now what do you say we get something to eat, I bet you're hungry," said Neelix.

"I am starving to tell the truth," admitted Kathryn.

"Alright then, lets head down to the mess hall, and see if we can find something else to trigger those memories," Neelix said with enthusiasm.

Chakotay was pacing the apartment, the local police had just left once again, and still weren't any closer to finding her than before. He was angry, they said the young man, Harron had something to do with it, possibly, and now he was nowhere to be found.

He couldn't just sit here, and yet he spent the past few days searching everywhere. Kathryn was gone, there was nothing else he could do. He went into the kitchen, it was about time he ate something, "Don't come any closer."

Chakotay stopped right in his tracks, "Harron, I've been looking for you."

Harry was in a corner of the kitchen, not exactly a safe place considering the circumstances, "Look stay calm. I know how this looks, but I can explain everything."

Chakotay charged him, grabbing him by his shirt and lifting him to his feet, "Where the hell is Kathryn?" he screamed.

"She is safe, don't worry I would never hurt her," said Harry hoping Chakotay would calm down some.

"Bring her back now, before I break your neck," said Chakotay shoving Harry tighter against the counter to prove his point.

"If you hurt me, you'll never find her. I'm the only one who can help you right now, so calm down, and let me go."

Chakotay considered the options, but there really aren't any so he loosened his grip, "Fine, what do you want?"

"We need to get access to the shield grid, I can't anymore, but you can. If we can shut it down, we could transport you and the others to safety," explained Harry.

"Where?" asked Chakotay.

"To Voyager, where Kathryn is, and where we all belong. I know this will be hard to believe, but you don't belong here, neither did Kathryn or a lot of other people. You were kidnapped, your memories wiped, just so these people could enlarge their workforce," said Harry.

"Voyager? Is that a ship?"

"Yes, the starship Voyager, you are her Commander, Kathryn is her Captain. She is there right now, getting her memories returned."

"I'm going to need more proof," said Chakotay, finally backing away from Harry.

"Fine, before you shut down the grid, contact them.... if you use a triaxilating frequency on a subspace band, you should get right through. They will show you what you need to know," said Harry.

Chakotay nodded, he would do anything at this point to find Kathryn. He listened to the young mans instructions then left to do as he was told.

Chakotay punched in the final code and watched the view screen come to life, "Starship Voyager?" he asked.

"Hello Commander," said the Doctor.

"I'd prefer you call me Chakotay right now," he answered.

"Of course."

"Harry said you had proof," he said, getting a little impatient.

Just then Kathryn stepped onto the screen wearing a uniform similar to the doctor, "They do. I'm ok Chakotay, anxious to get you back here."

"Kathryn," he said, a little shocked at her appearance.

"Harry told you what to do? Go do it Chakotay, we can get you and the others home," said Kathryn with a smile.

Chakotay nodded, smiling from ear to ear, "I've missed you."

"I know, me too, go do it Chakotay," she said urging him on.

He nodded once again pleased to see she's still the same Kathryn  he's grown to know and love and turned off the view screen, he had a job to do and he wanted to get it done as fast as possible.

Chakotay sat on the biobed wait for the doctor to release him, "Well doctor, am I free to go?"

"Yes commander, you are recovering quite nicely. Any fuzzy memories will return in time," said the Doctor.

"I'm feeling quite clear actually Doctor, I just have a few things to straighten out, so if you don't mind..." said Chakotay hinting at his leaving.

"Of course, if you experience any difficulties, contact me immediately."

He watched Chakotay leave and then turned back to the rest of his patients.

Chakotay entered Kathryn's  quarters silently, waiting for her to speak, "Chakotay, come on in." she carefully studied him, "How are you feeling?"

"Fine actually, the treatment worked well. And yourself?" he said, damn this was awkward.

"I'm fine Chakotay, come over here, sit with me," she said, patting the couch. "I know this is awkward, we don't know how we should act. But I can tell you this, and maybe it will put you at ease. I know it's not proper for a Captain and First Officer to have a relationship on the ship. Its something that I have lived with all these years on this ship, have stood by it, down to the letter. I think I did overly well teaching you those same ideas." She eyed him carefully, noticing the look of disappointment that crossed his face, "but Chakotay, what they did was wrong, but it was also enlightening. Those people may have stripped away my memories, but what they also did was strip away that protocol I have lived by. In essence opening a door that had been closed for a very long time. The showed me what life could be like if it I didn't let the protocols get in the way. Even having no idea who I really am, I still found you Chakotay, only this time I didn't hold back. I loved you before, and I love you even more now Chakotay. I want to make this work, I want to raise our baby together, showing him or her just how much I love it's daddy."

Chakotay enveloped her in a hug, happiness overwhelming him, "Oh Kathryn, you have made me the happiest man alive, you can't possibly imagine."

Kathryn returned the hug, "Oh I think I can."

Kathryn sat on the bridge, looking around at her crew, "Our family is once again together, and we have Harry, Neelix and the Doctor to thank for that." She looked over at Chakotay grinning and reached her hand out to him, he placed a small brown box in it and smiled. "Harry Kim, you have performed above and beyond the call of duty," she began as she got up and slowly made her way over to him. "It is my honor and my privilege to present you with this," she said, handing him the small brown box.

"Captain?" asked Harry. He took the box and opened it as instructed, noticing the contents he looked up to see his command team break out in smiles.

"Congratulations Lieutenant Kim, here let me help you get these on," said Kathryn, removing the lieutenant pips from the box.

"Congratulations Harry," said Chakotay, reaching out to shake the young mans hand.

"Thank you sir, and the same to you," said Harry.

Chakotay shook his head as he walked back to his seat,  laughing, "Well Captain?"

"It may not have been real Chakotay, but it sure opened my eyes," she said, looking right at him.

"That it did, I think I have a lot to be grateful for to them," he added.

"Yes, same here. Shall we set a course for home?" she said to the crew.

"Just waiting for your orders Captain," said Tom.

"Then do it Mr. Paris," she ordered. Reaching for Chakotay's hand, she held on tight as she watched the stars streak by, this was home too, she knew now in reality she didn't need to make it to earth, she was home. Earth was simply another goal to reach.
